The answer of this question is, we don't know. The "Earth" name is derived from both German & English words, 'erde' and 'eor(th)e/ertha', respectively, means ground. One interesting fact about its name: Earth is the only planet that its name wasn't named after a Greek or goddess or Roman god:

What protects the Earth from space?

The Earth's specially designed (by our Lord) magnetic field serves to deflect most of the solar winds, in absence of such specially designed magnetic field, charged particles would strip away the ozone layer that is protecting the Earth and its inhabitants from harmful ultraviolet radiations, life to thrive.

Earth has two such belts and sometimes others may be temporarily created. The discovery of the belts is credited to James Van Allen, therefore as a result of his work, Earth's magnetic belts given name after Van Allen belts. A Van Allen radiation belt is a zone of energetic charged particles, most of such energetic charged particles originate from the solar wind, which is captured by and held around a planet by that planet's magnetic field, which is two types, whereas sometimes others shields may be temporarily created by or Lord, true God, Elohim, Jehovah, singular Eloah, Allah (SWT). Earth's two main belts/shields as stated above extend from an altitude approx.. 640 to 58,000 km (400 to 36,040 mi) above the surface of the earth in which region radiation intensity levels vary. Most of the particles that form the protection belts are thought to come from solar wind and other particles by cosmic rays. By trapping the solar winds, the magnetic fields deflect those energetic particles and protect the atmosphere of earth from destruction with the will of our Lord to protect the millions of forms of species on planet earth.

Our true God: Elohim, Jehovah, singular Eloah, Allah (SWT); has provided more protection for mankind to live their lives to complete the test period as ordained by Lord of all the Prophets and Messengers. Earth's atmosphere (a mixture of gases is commonly known as air) is made of a layer of gases surrounding our planet Earth and retained by the gravity of planet Earth's. Earth's atmosphere contains roughly 78% of nitrogen, 21% of oxygen, 0.97% argon, carbon dioxide 0.04% and trace amounts of other gases, and water vapour.
